POLYGRAPH TESTING
Usually mislabeled as a "lie detector test" (which probably should be known rather as "truth verification examination"), a polygraph examination is a test that has remained controversial since it's inception around the turn of the 20th century. Generally, the polygraph uses blood pressure reading, skin conductivity (aka galvanic skin response), and heart rate to verify the veracity of the subject's responses to the questions posed to him by the polygrapher. The qualifications of the polygrapher, the location, the time, date, physical condition of the subject, machine, and other factors, in my opinion cannot be understated. Many potential clients have come to me asking my opinion on whether or not they should submit to polygraph testing which has been requested by law enforcement. This is a loaded question for law enforcement to pose to the accused; fail the test, guilt is presumed, refuse the test, guilt is implied, pass the test, it is not admissible in court to dispute guilt.
I utilize private polygraphers in some criminal cases. The testing conducted at my direction is done under neutral circumstances. My advice to those who are suspected of criminal activity or who are asked by law enforcement to submit to polygraph testing, is that you should probably consult an experienced lawyer before making such a decision.
