WHAT DOES THIS ALL MEAN?
Most people I know have been the recipients of traffic tickets of some kind. Most people are confused by much of the information on the ticket. In DUI cases, tickets provide detailed lawyers with very important information. Below I will try to outline what I find important on these tickets.
1. "Name of Trial Court": Tells me where my client will potentially tried and where I either need to go or where I need to send paperwork to.
2. "Violation-Court Appearance Required (yes) (no)": Should Read "Driving Under the Influence". This is the offense the person is charged with.
3. "Violaton Section NO": Should read S.C. Code Sec. 56-5-2930, which is our DUI law.
4. "Name of Arresting Officer": Who wrote the ticket.
5. "Troop": What unit, if a Trooper, the arresting officer belongs to.
6. "Time of Violation": What time the violation occured. Can be very important for purposes of our videotaping law.
7. "Lat | Long": Gives us the lattitude and longitude of where the crime occured. Very important as well.
8. "B.A. Level": Gives us the blood alcohol concentration of the accused.
9. Finally, below "B.A. Level" one will see a ticket number. This is a very important number as courts use these numbers for docketing and identification purposes.
While much of this information may seem mundane and meaningless, much can be gleaned from the "Who, What, When, Where, and Why" found on these tickets.
